    I figured out my IAC was bad. It was honking like a goose even when it was unplugged, so I swapped on another one I had. Now the TB whistles (BBK). I'll address that today. I also have a leak on the other header gasket that I didn't replace yet. Luckily, this one is really easy to get to and can be done in <1hr.


    I had my wife shoot a video of my timing issues last night so yall can all see that I'm not crazy.
    There are 3 white lines on my balancer - 0, 10, 20 degrees. Watch as it revs - it will advance past 20 to about 30 degrees and then crash back down to 10. As soon as I let off the throttle, it goes to 0 before bouncing back up to 20. Weird.

    I thought I had tracked down my issue Christmas Eve, but apparently I didn't after driving it yesterday. I'm going to try one more thing today, but I'm also ordering the rest of the stuff for the DIS swap. I've had about 6 people tell me now that ditching TFI and going DIS solved all of their ignition problems.


    What really chaps my ass is that I purposely installed the Megasquirt well ahead of the 351w swap so I could learn it and iron out any kinks. The 302 ran perfect, so it should stand to reason that the MS and factory harness didn't have any issues leading up to the swap. If that's the case, then the only thing that changed within the ignition system was the distributor. I've swapped out 2 distributors and 2 TFI modules, so I'm honestly at a loss.

    What's even more maddening is I can't get mad and call anything junk or a piece of s*** because, well... I built it all, so all i'd be doing is insulting myself, LOL

    Makin progress finally MFERS!!!!!!

    I had a laundry list of issues, so I'll recap.

    1) Ignition was breaking up - MSD 6a box cured that.

    2) Timing was retarding with rpm.
    2a) Discovered TFI control in the MS hardware was not hooked up. Fixed that
    2b) TFI module tested bad. Replaced with other TFI module

    3) Ran better at this point but timing was still retarding some with RPM. That gets us to yesterday. I put about 100 miles on the car and as usual, 'ran' flawless as a blanket statement. Sat in some traffic, had some interstate business, all in all ran well.

    At about 3:00 yesterday, I realized I had mis-read instructions for a setting in MS. I left work and headed west to see Scott. I added 50usec of latency to the ignition and noticed an improvement in top end, albeit small. After leaving Scott's house, I bumped it to 75usec and it ran well enough to whoop a 300 hp bmw off the line to about 70mph when I lifted. I got home and put a timing light on it and bumped it to 90 and then 120usec. Could it use more? Probably, but it was late and I'm 99% sure my neighbor is over me and my noise lately.

    What is latency? It is the delay between when the computer tells the coil to fire and when the spark actually happens. At low rpm, it isn't much of an issue, but as the speed of the engine exceeds the travel time of the spark, it causes the retarding effect. All I was doing was adding a positive offset to the spark.

    I'm about to tear the engine down for powder coating. It's going to look killer and I'm tickled shitless that the car is going to run well and look great too!

    Oh no, we're still going DIS. The fact that I have to band-aid my ignition with such a huge offset to work mostly right is ridiculous. I'm into the DIS swap for $275 and all of the parts are on the way. No more TFI, no more plug wires, no more setting the distributor. It's all going bye bye for a much more efficient and precise system.

    But yes, anyone who says that tuning with MS was a breeze and their car made stupid power easily probably paid someone to do it... although Im sure a few people are outlying cases who it does come easy to.

    After several days of trouble shooting, i have exactly..... nothing.

    I just re-did all the jumpers within the MS and reflashed with new firmware. I also will re-calibrate the wideband as it seemed a little rich.

    I hope like hell this works. It's consumed me for a week or so and my wife is getting tired of me moping around haha
